Thornton is a two-and-a-half-story, five-bay brick structure in the Federal style. It has three dormers on the north side and two on the south, with large chimney stacks in the center of each gable.
Dendrochronological analysis has shown that the building was constructed from timbers felled in the winter of 1796/7 and the spring of 1797.
