Society Hill was originally built as a one-story, five-bay house with a dormered roof and a massive chimney. In the early 19th century, the house was raised to two stories and front and rear porches were added.

Dendrochronological analysis has shown that the building was constructed from a timber felled in the winter of 1796/7.
